The Blue Duck Gallery opened in Caversham in February 2005 with the aim of exhibiting works of art and applied art
that embodied the quirkiness, individuality and innovation of contemporary British craft designers and artists. We were
very lucky to find that many of our customers felt as we did - that there was a lack of small, independent galleries in
Reading who were supplying original, handcrafted works of art and so we quickly managed to build up an extremely
supportive local base of customers and friends who really want us to succeed and grow.
Since we opened owner, Clare Varley, has been determined to find unusual items while still maintaining the highest of standards.
The gallery supports both local artists and artists from all over the UK. We have a huge selection and variety of work
from Sarah Heppner's beautiful still life paintings (see our events
and press
page) to Olivia Brown's naughty dogs and Samantha Bryan's fairies with their quirky fairy aiding inventions. For gifts we have a
large range of prices from as little as £3 and for those with more expensive tastes the gallery will soon be
part of the Arts Council's Own Art loan scheme.
In the last year The Blue Duck Gallery has managed to build up a good reputation both because of the quality of work we
supply and because we are committed to supporting artists in Britain. The development of this reputation has been helped in
no small way by the gallery's inclusion in the Craft Galleries Guide book.
The book is one of most comprehensive and illustrative guides to the UK's applied arts galleries available and we stock
copies of it in the The Blue Duck.
There are many reasons to come and visit Caversham and Reading, including many fabulous restaurants, wonderful trips up and down
the Thames, dazzling events at the Hexagon Theatre and related sites and of course to see us at The Blue Duck Gallery.
