Penny Rees studied fine art at Hereford College of Art and Design; she has also gained diplomas in specialist paint finishes and furniture design. Until recently Penny ran a successful bespoke framing business with her husband, specializing in hand finished frames. She now devotes her time to painting, using oils to build up layers of colour, creating her vibrant images. She successfully exhibited in galleries in London, the South of England and Wales. Happily for Penny there are many collectors of her work both here and abroad.
'Oil paint, how it moves, what happens to it, the colour and smell, fill my working day. Each painting is a mix of stark line, vibrant colour and heavy impasto. Flowers, landscapes, boats have a tentative start, move through muddles times, before appearing at last the work I wish it to be. My emotional response to the world around me is fairly obvious in my painterly works, which are ebullient in form and colour, endeavouring to encapsulate the surge of life.' Penny's work has been very much admired in the gallery, especially her fabulously vibrant and eye-catching poppies and Meditterean fields full of sunflowers. For this reason we have decided to hold an exhibition of her work which will incorporate a wider portfolio of subjects, including boats and townscapes. The exhibition will run from Sunday 6th November (preview) until Sunday 4th December.
