Sarah is a local artist who has previously exhibited at The Jelly Leg'd Chicken. She lives in Reading with her husband and somehow manages to paint in between running around after her two young sons, Lewis and Dominic. Sarah frequently takes her inspiration from flowers. She is fascinated by both their symbolic beauty, which is demonstrated in the many occasions which we choose to celebrate with flowers, and their physical beauty and diversity of shape and form, which is developed through nature in order to attract insects to spread their pollen.
Rather than endlessly working images in sketchbooks Sarah finds that her paintings have greater clarity and sharpness if she goes straight from a preliminary sketch to canvas, often aided by photographs. She is particularly interested in the play of light and dark across different textures and shapes, for instance, fabrics, glass, water, all of which frequently appear in her pictures. These elements are used to draw the eye to the unusual effects they can produce upon one another e.g. the jewel effect of water drops on flowers or prismic effect of light on glass. Sarah hopes that her paintings show people the unusual aspects of everyday things. Sarah's exhibition will run from January 29th until February 12th and the gallery will continue to hold all its usual stock of paintings, jewellery, ceramics and glass during this time.
